Eternal Love is an intervention based on the poem My last Duchess by Robert Browning. By examining the poem, multiple variations to the ‘what if?† question were explored. (Pope 2002, pp. 2-4) This textual intervention was built on Browning’s original meaning of the poem, that the Duke is very possessive of his wife, and does not like her having relationships outside of their own. Prompting the question, what would happen if the poem was from written from the Dukes point of view? Browning’s original poem was changed and re-centred so that the reader could better understand the motives, and reasoning’s of the domineering Duke. (Pope 2002, pp. 2-4) By developing Eternal Love as a parallel text, it enabled the dark theme of the the story to†¦show more content†¦Choosing those specific objects with the characters responding in the way they did, shows the emotional power they hold over the character. (R.T.Smith 2007, n.p.) It also provokes the reader into thinking about their personal objects, and what they would do provided with the same stimulus to respond. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies directed by Burr Steers is a reconfigured text based on the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Movies, and novels do not come ‘ex nihilo’, but they are always derived from previous work. (David Cowart, 1994, pp.1-2) The chosen scene that has been intervened on, is the last battle scene in the film. As this is a crucial scene in the relationship between the two main characters, multiple ‘what if?’ questions arise on what would happen if the circumstances were different. (Pope 1995,pp. 2-4) Changing this scene implies that there is a relationship, or an understanding between the characters that generates inferences from the audience concerning what is happening. (Pope, 1995, pp. 167) However, as this scene has been altered, declarations of the characters love no longer occurs. Originally Elizabeth Bennet was awake and professed her lover to the unconscious Mr Darcy. Who unknowingly had heard what she said, resulting in a marriage proposal. Intervening on the subjective positions of the characters, shifted assumptions that the audience may have preconceived.
